Charlotte Business Journal - April 14, 2006
Local tourism marketers have turned to Steve Jobs for a little help.
Jobs, of course, is the Apple executive behind the iPod, which is being used by the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority to persuade more conventions to come to the Queen City.
Working with ad shop Boone/Oakley, the CRVA distributed podcasts -- video clips touting the city that can be played on Jobs' portable music and video players -- to 100 top meeting planners this month.
The sleek packaging includes a video iPod and promises subsequent podcasts detailing Charlotte's offerings. The first version in the mailing includes plugs for some of uptown's hippest hangouts: Mert's Heart & Soul, Blue and the Mint Museum of Craft + Design.
CRVA marketing exec Gina Hight unveiled the high-tech promotional campaign at a board meeting this week.
Several board members pronounced the campaign solid, although CRVA Chairman Luther Cochrane was left wanting: "I think the real question is, Do we get one of these?" Sorry, Luther, but the answer is no.
